Overview
Our New Zealand Stag & Tahr Alpine Hunt combines two of the most sought-after species in the Southern Alps in one incredible adventure. This 5-day guided hunt offers hunters the opportunity to pursue a trophy Red Stag up to 450 SCI along with a free-range Himalayan Bull Tahr in the rugged mountains of New Zealand’s South Island.
The hunt begins on expansive private estates and hill country properties where strong genetics and ideal habitat consistently produce exceptional Red Stag trophies. These areas allow hunters to pursue mature stags in beautiful rolling terrain using classic spot-and-stalk hunting methods.
After the stag hunt, hunters venture into the breathtaking alpine terrain of the Southern Alps to pursue Himalayan Bull Tahr. These hunts are conducted free-range in steep mountain country, creating a challenging and rewarding mountain hunting experience.
With dramatic landscapes, world-class trophies, and experienced guides, this hunt offers one of the most exciting big game hunting opportunities available in New Zealand.
Region
New Zealand’s South Island is widely recognized as one of the world’s premier hunting destinations. Towering mountain ranges, vast private ranches, and exceptional wildlife populations combine to create an ideal environment for producing trophy animals.
The Southern Lakes region surrounding Wanaka and the Southern Alps offers outstanding Red Stag hunting along with access to some of the best Himalayan Tahr hunting anywhere in the world.
This region allows hunters to experience both classic stag hunting on large private estates and true alpine mountain hunting in the same trip.

The Hunting Area & Terrain
Hunters will pursue Red Stag on expansive private estates and hill country properties that offer excellent habitat and exceptional trophy genetics.
For Himalayan Tahr, hunters move into the steep alpine mountains of the Southern Alps where these animals inhabit rugged cliffs, high basins, and rocky ridgelines. These hunts are conducted free-range in true mountain terrain, often requiring careful glassing and strategic spot-and-stalk hunting.
Species Included
• 1 Red Stag up to 450 SCI
• 1 Himalayan Bull Tahr (free-range mountain hunt)
Red Stag trophies can be upgraded to larger SCI class animals for an additional trophy fee.
Hunters may have the opportunity to pursue additional species during their stay, including:
-
Fallow Deer
-
Arapawa Ram
-
South Pacific Goat
-
Chamois
Many hunters choose to add these species to their stag hunt to create a true New Zealand multi-species adventure.
