Overview
New Zealand’s South Island is world-renowned for producing some of the largest Red Stag trophies on earth. The Southern Lakes and Otago regions combine expansive private estates, rugged alpine terrain, and exceptional herd genetics to create one of the premier red stag hunting destinations anywhere in the world.
Our 5-day Red Stag hunts take place across multiple large private properties and mountain landscapes where mature stags roam. These areas provide ideal habitat for producing exceptional trophies, with estate stags commonly ranging from 380 to 550 SCI and beyond.
Hunters can expect classic spot-and-stalk hunting across rolling hill country, open valleys, and alpine terrain. Using 4WD vehicles or ATVs to access higher elevations, hunters glass for mature stags before planning careful stalks on foot. This method creates a challenging and rewarding hunting experience in some of the most breathtaking scenery in the South Pacific.
The famous Red Stag roar (rut) typically occurs from mid-March through mid-April, when mature stags become highly vocal and territorial. During this period hunters may hear stags roaring across valleys at first light while guides locate dominant bulls and plan close encounters.
This hunt offers not only exceptional trophies, but also the opportunity to experience New Zealand’s legendary landscapes, where towering mountains, clear alpine rivers, and massive open ranchlands create an unforgettable hunting adventure.
Region
Southern Lakes Region – South Island, New Zealand
The Southern Lakes region of New Zealand’s South Island is famous for its dramatic alpine scenery and world-class hunting opportunities. Vast sheep and cattle stations spanning thousands of acres provide the perfect habitat for thriving red stag populations.

The result is a diverse hunting environment that consistently produces mature trophy stags while maintaining healthy herds for future generations.
The area surrounding Wanaka and the Southern Alps is widely regarded as one of the premier hunting regions in New Zealand, offering access to both estate and free-range hunting opportunities within breathtaking landscapes.
